What to evaluate on History   
  • Alarm features 
    • Family history of GI cancer 
    • Persistent vomiting 
    • Unexplained iron deficiency anemia 
    • Unintentional weight loss 
    • Worsening dysphagia or odynophagia 
What to evaluate on Physical exam   
  • Frequently normal in most patients 
  • Alarm features 
    • Palpable mass 
    • Palpable lymphadenopathy 
    • Jaundice 
Labs/Imaging  (only needed in patients with alarm features) 
  • Complete blood counts 
  • Blood chemistry 
  • Liver function tests 
  • Serum lipase 
  • Serum amylase
